The European Systems Safety Society, ESSS, is a charity organisation
serving as a focus and forum for system safety for all European countries,
promoting education, understanding, advancement and standardisation of system safety know-how.
The ESSS adopts a holistic perspective on all facets of Systems Assurance of which, safety
constitutes a significant human focus with burgeoning regulation and rising societal consciousness
and concern. In this spirit, systems theory and analysis, design, application, disposal and all
emergent properties are treated relevant in terms of their effect on and relation to a system's
potential impact on health, safety and welfare of people.
This holism is founded on the understanding that the overall properties of a system are
a compromise between two broad and often inter-related classes of performance; "technical/commercial"
such as throughput, cost, efficiency and "safety/security".
