The media these days are regularly reminding us of a number of serious and large scale social, environmental and technological issues of concern to us all. Majority of these issues pose a threat to the health, safety, and welfare of the society at large, and entail economic, environmental losses.

We believe it is possible to do better in anticipating and preventing accidents, and where this is not possible, in protecting life and property from the consequences of these accidents. That is the main reason why we formed the European Systems Safety Society (ESSS), which is a registered Charity in England and Wales.

The ESSS is intended to be a focal point to further our understanding of complex and often critical issues which pose a risk of harm to people, as well as potential damage to the environment and property.

As practitioners of the science of Systems Safety, we intend to encourage, develop, apply and share the best practice in scientific and analytical disciplines to help make better decisions and improve the quality of life for all. We intend to realise these goals through conducting special studies, consulting across industry and technology sectors, and sharing a potent blend of scientific discipline, experience and societal values. However, we believe this is better achieved through taking an inclusive rather than a parochial view of the issues, hence the systemic approach and our title.

Given the extent and severity of the key challenges, we need to collaboratively devise more effective solutions to the plethora of technological and environmental problems facing our society today. We invite you to join ESSS in realising this worthy goal and helping to make a difference for the future. We will provide a friendly and advanced environment to support your professional development and competence, as well as a forum in which you can air your views and contribute to the development of the art and science of system safety.

If you would like to join the ESSS and support these activities then please read on.
